What is Corona Kavach Policy?

The Corona Kavach policy can be defined as an indemnity health insurance plan that has been designed specifically to provide coverage for the medical and hospitalizations costs that may arise when you seek treatment for Covid-19. The policy covers both post and pre-hospitalization expenses along with the domiciliary costs that may arise in these cases. It also provides coverage for the expenses that you may incur in getting treated for Covid at home as well as the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) treatment that you may seek in these cases. The policy also provides coverage for the comorbid medical issues that you may suffer from owing to Coronavirus when you are hospitalized.

The Government of India has taken several measures and made a lot of effort to deal with the situation. In much the same vein, the insurance industry has also created various health insurance plans for helping people cope with the financial ramifications of the disease. This includes both generic and specialized policies. If you want to know which Corona Kavach policy is best you would have to compare all the options that you have in this regard and determine based on that.

The IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) has come up with certain guidelines regarding the policies that we are talking about over here. The sum assured in these policies can be anywhere between 50,000 and five lakh rupees. These plans are available in three different tenures – three and half months, nine and half months, and six and half months. To enter the policy you must be at least 18 years and you would not be allowed to do so if you are older than 65 years. You can buy the Corona Kavach policy online as well.

The policy has a waiting period of 15 days. This means that its coverage would be activated after that period of you having bought the same. However, you have to pay the total premium of these policies right at the time when you buy the policy. The benefits that you get from the policy depend on the nature of your hospitalization.

Features and Benefits of Corona Kavach Policy

Following are some of the advantages and characteristic traits that you get from the Corona cover policy:

  • It provides coverage for hospitalization expenses such as co-morbidities, ICU (intensive care unit) and nursing cost, room rent, and consultation fees for surgeons and doctors, to name a few.
  • You have to pay the entire premium of the policy right at the time you buy it.
  • It covers costs for post and pre-hospitalization but only till a certain point in time. In some cases, such coverage is provided for 14 days at the most.
  • The policy does not have any caps on coverage for room rent.
  • It covers costs incurred in AYUSH treatment.
  • It takes care of all the basic healthcare cases that are related to Covid 19.
  • As per what the industry is saying this is a standard insurance policy.
  • The policy comes with three options in terms of coverage period – 105 days, 285 days, and 195 days.
  • These guidelines have a validity date though.

One of the best ways to reduce the premium that you pay on these policies would be to look at the Corona Kavach policy premium chart and compare based on the data that you get from over there.

The Corona Kavach policy provides coverage for the following areas:

  • coverage for room rent

As you would know already, the sum assured in this policy could be anywhere between 50,000 and five lakh rupees. There are no deductibles in these policies though. And, this is an indemnity policy that provides coverage for the money you have spent on getting treatment for Covid at a hospital.

Before you buy the Corona Kavach policy online you should know that the maximum coverage that you get for money paid to an ambulance is 2000 rupees. This includes transferring the patient to a hospital. As per the hospital cash benefit of the policy, you get daily cash benefit for a maximum of 0.5% of the sum assured of your policy. However, there is a limit to which such a benefit would be provided and that is mentioned in your policy document.

What does the Corona Kavach policy not cover?

Following are some of the exclusions of the Covid Kavach insurance policy:

  • The policy does not cover expenses that you do not incur in the treatment or diagnosis of Coronavirus.
  • It would not pay you for the custodial care you have availed of at home. Similarly, it does not cover any nursing facility that you may have hired at home for bed ridden patient.
  • If you buy medicines without taking the doctor’s advice or a proper prescription it would not be covered by the policy. This includes the likes of weight loss programs and dietary supplements.

How to cancel these policies?

You – the insured – can cancel the Corona cover policy if you feel that it is not providing you with sufficient coverage or if it is not meeting certain other requirements. However, you are allowed to do so only within 15 days of having bought the policy. In this case, the insurer would follow the latest norms of IRDAI to adjust the premium that you have paid while buying the policy. IRDAI has done this so that it can make the policy a flexible one for the users.
