World Veterinary Day History

John Gamgee, a professor in Edinburg Veterinary College was a British veterinarian and inventor. In 1863, Gamgee invited European veterinarians to join a meeting to discuss the issues in the field of veterinary medicine. Later on, this meeting came to be known as the very first congress of the International Veterinary Association.

Later on, in Stockholm where the 15th Congress of International Veterinary was observed, the member countries discussed the need for a global veterinary organization. Thus, in 1959 when the next congress was held in Madrid, the establishment of the World Veterinary Association took place.

The event was initiated with the aim to give attention to animal health and welfare along with increasing awareness about public and environmental health.

Presently, the World Veterinary Association works in cooperation with many other prominent organizations worldwide like the WHO or World Health Organization.

In the year 2001, the World Veterinary Association decided to celebrate World Veterinary Day on the last Saturday in the month of April. The day was established to promote veterinary as an occupation and to augment the welfare of animals. The event picks a new and different theme each year.
