Car insurance claim process and contact information

Car insurance claims occur when you are involved in an accident and cause damage or injuries to any third party or face damages to the car itself. Moreover, claims also occur when the car is lost or stolen. So, car insurance claims are said to occur in these three instances –

  • When a third party is injured or killed
  • When the property belonging to a third party is damaged
  • When the car faces damages
  • When the car is lost or stolen

Under any of these instances, the policyholder is required to follow the car insurance claim process for a quick settlement of claim. Here is the process which is required to be followed –

For third party claims

  • Inform the insurance company immediately of the claim
  • File a FIR with the police
  • The claim is taken to the motor accidents tribunal. Once the tribunal passes a judgement, the insurance company pays the claim to the third party

For own damage claims

  • Inform the insurance company immediately of the claim
  • Provide the policy number, car registration number and driving license number
  • The company would inform the policyholder of the nearest networked workshop. The car should be taken to that workshop for repairs if the policyholder wants a cashless claim settlement. For reimbursement claims, the car can be repaired at any workshop
  • Once the car is at the preferred workshop, the insurance company’s surveyor would visit the workshop to assess the damages
  • The surveyor would then prepare a claim estimate and submit it with the insurance company
  • The policyholder would also have to submit a claim form and copies of the RC book, driving license and other documents as required
  • The insurance company approves the claim after which repairs begin
  • Once the repairs are completed, the company settles the claim directly with the garage and the policyholder can take delivery of the car
  • In case of reimbursement claims, the policyholder gets the car repaired at any garage. Then the original bills of the repair are to be submitted with the insurance company along with the claim form, RC book, driving license and other documents. The insurance company analyses the bills and the documents and approves the claim. Once the claim is approved, the repair costs are reimbursed by the insurance company

For loss or theft of the car

  • Inform the insurance company immediately about the loss or theft
  • A police FIR is to be filed mandatorily mentioning the theft and the details of the theft
  • If the car is not located, the police issue a ‘non-traceable report’. This report should be submitted with the insurance company for claim settlement
  • The insurance company might require both the sets of keys, original and duplicate, when settling a claim for theft or loss of the car
  • Once the keys are submitted along with the claim form and other documents, the insurance company pays the Insured Declared Value applicable under the car insurance policy as claim.
