To understand the significance of linking Aadhaar with UAN and PF accounts, let us first understand the terms one by one.
Employees Provident Fund (EPF), also known as Provident Fund (PF), is a pension scheme introduced by the government of India for the salaried employees of the organized sector. Here, both the employee and the employer make contributions to build a corpus for the employee to receive upon retirement.
Universal Account Number (UAN) is a number through which employees can link their multiple provident funds (PF) IDs under the umbrella of one universal account/ID. The EPFO assigns UANs to its members.
Aadhaar is a significant document of identification in India that is required for most government services.
If a PF account holder is willing to receive continued benefits under the PF scheme, it is necessary to seed UAN with the Aadhaar number as directed by EPFO.
Let’s understand the stepwise process to link Aadhaar with UAN and PF in this post.
Every employee working in the unorganized sector and enrolled under the EPF scheme is eligible to link their Aadhaar cards to UAN and EPF accounts.
Below are the key prerequisites for linking Aadhaar to UAN and PF:
Before proceeding with the UAN Aadhaar link online, it is necessary to check if you have an active UAN. To check your UAN status, you may contact your employer or visit the EPFO portal. Here are the steps to check your UAN via the EPFO portal:

Another important prerequisite before linking Aadhaar with UAN and PF is to update your KYC. You are required to update your KYC from time to time in your EPFO account. Below are the steps to update your KYC details:
Ensure that the details mentioned in your Aadhaar card match with the details on the documents uploaded for KYC update
Here are the steps on how to link Aadhaar with UAN:
Step 1 – Go to https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php, the EPFO portal, and use your UAN and password to log in
Step 2 – On the top panel, go to the ‘Manage’ tab. From the drop-down menu, click on the ‘KYC’ option
Step 3 – Click on the Aadhaar checkbox under the KYC section and enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and name
Step 4 – Click on the ‘Save’ button
Step 5 – Once done, you will receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked registered mobile number
Step 6 – Submit the OTP. Click on the ‘Submit’ button to complete the Aadhaar linking process.
Step 7 – Once the EPFO approves the KYC details, they will feature under the ‘Approved KYC’ tab, and your Aadhaar will be linked to UAN
Once the KYC details are completed and approved, you will receive an SMS regarding the same at your registered mobile number. After the approval, your Aadhaar will be linked to your EPF account. It generally takes about three to five working days or so to verify and approve the documents.
In most cases, the approval of the KYC details is done by your employer. However, if they fail to do so due to any reason, you can get in touch with the EPF Grievance Portal and get the approval done by EPFO officials.
Once you link your Aadhaar with UAN and PF, you can check the status of the linkage by visiting the official website at https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface. Log in to the portal by entering your UAN and Password. On the page that appears, look for Aadhaar and click on it. If the status against your Aadhaar number says ‘Verified’, it means that your Aadhaar is verified by UIDAI and linked to your EPF account.
