An Aadhaar card is an imperative proof of identity for people in India. Most of the services and benefits in the country, like opening a bank account, filing an ITR, applying for a passport, procuring loans and investments, etc., require your Aadhaar number.

Hence, it is important to keep your Aadhaar details, such as biometric and demographic information, updated because any discrepancy in the same would nullify an individual to apply for several benefits and schemes offered by the government.

An Aadhaar card is generally carried as a hard copy, however, you may note that you can avail of an e-Aadhaar card and use it for all the different purposes that a regular physical Aadhaar card is used for.

What is an e-Aadhaar card?

A password-protected digital version of the Aadhaar card is called E-Aadhaar. An e-Aadhaar is equivalent to a physical Aadhaar card, per the Aadhaar Act. By following these steps and entering your enrollment number or Aadhaar number, you can download your e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI website:

How to download the e-Aadhaar PDF?

1. Through UIDAI Portal

The digital form of your Aadhaar card can be downloaded from the official portal of UIDAI. For this, your mobile number must be registered with your Aadhaar data. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Visit https://uidai.gov.in/, the official UIDAI website

  2. On the homepage, click on ‘Download Aadhar’ under the ‘My Aadhaar’ tab

  3. You will be redirected to https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/ page

  4. Fill in the required details. You can either use your Aadhaar number/Enrolment number/Virtual ID number

  5. Now enter the captcha code to generate OTP by clicking on ‘Send OTP’
  6. Enter the OTP number received and click on ‘Download’ Aadhaar to complete the UIDAI Aadhaar download process
  7. You will receive a PDF of the digital copy. Enter the password for the PDF to open it (the E-Aadhaar card password comprises of first four letters of your name and your year of birth) and to get a copy of your e-Aadhaar card

2. Through the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre

If you cannot download your e-Aadhaar due to not having access to the internet, you can simply visit an Aadhaar enrolment center near you to get it downloaded. You will have to take all the required documents with you for the purpose. Follow the below steps for the same.

  1. Visit any Aadhaar enrolment center near you.
  2. Offer the required details to the operator, like your Aadhaar number or enrollment ID, etc.
  3. The operator will use the details to verify your identity. You may also have to give your biometrics in case it is required.
  4. Once the details are verified, you will receive a copy of your e-Aadhar card.
  5. You may have to pay a nominal charge to the operator as a fee for the service.

How to Unlock the e-Aadhaar Card PDF?

Once you download your e-Aadhaar card from the UIDAI portal by following the steps mentioned above, you will receive a PDF of the digital copy. To unlock the PDF file and open it, you must use a password.

The e-Aadhaar PDF password comprises the initial four letters of your name (in capital letters and as mentioned on your Aadhaar card) and your year of birth.

For example, if the name of the Aadhaar holder is Sunil and his year of birth is 1999, the password would be SUNI1999.

Why Do You Need an e-Aadhaar Card?

Carrying your physical Aadhaar card with you is important as you may require it for multiple purposes in your day-to-day life. However, carrying the physical document makes it prone to misplacing. With an e-Aadhaar card, you can prevent the risk of losing the document, and it is convenient to carry and procure anytime and anywhere required. You can substitute the e-Aadhaar card to authenticate any service required.

The e-Aadhaar download can be done through the UIDAI website. It makes your Aadhaar information handy and eliminates the chances of forgetting or losing your Aadhaar number.

What Information Is Included on an e-Aadhaar Card?

The information available on your e-Aadhaar card is similar to that of a regular physical Aadhaar card. Below is the information available in the downloaded version of the Aadhaar card or the e-Aadhaar;

  • 12-digit Aadhaar number
  • Name of the Aadhaar cardholder
  • Address of the Aadhaar cardholder
  • Gender of the Aadhaar cardholder
  • Photo and Date of Birth of the Aadhaar holder

Further, the Aadhaar download also contains the date of the Aadhaar generation and download.

How to Authenticate Your Digital Signature in an e-Aadhaar Card?

To validate a digital signature on an e-Aadhaar card, you need to follow the below steps:

  1. The first step involves downloading the e-Aadhaar card from UIDAI using the steps mentioned above and opening the pdf file in Adobe Reader
  2. Go to the ‘validity unknown’ icon and tap the ‘Validate Signature’ button
  3. A window will open to validate the status of the signature. Click on ‘Signature Properties’
  4. Next, tap on ‘Show Signer’s Certificate’
  5. Confirm that a certification is there that is issued under ‘(n)Code Solutions CA 2014’.
  6. Click on ‘Export’ on the summary page tab
  7. Go to ‘Next’ to save the certificate on your computer
  8. Again, click ‘Next’ and then ‘Finish’
  9. Click on the ‘Trust’ tab. Now, click on ‘Add to trusted certificate’. Select the three given options under ‘Certified documents’ and click ‘OK’
  10. Again, tap on ‘Validate Signature’
  11. Once ‘ (n)Code Solutions CA 2014’ is confirmed as a Trusted ID, the following documents from CCA with digital signatures will automatically get validated when opened

An e-Aadhaar is the best option for anyone to access their Aadhaar details anytime. In case you lose your physical Aadhaar copy or misplace it somewhere, you can use the e-Aadhaar copy as a substitute for every service required.
