What is the Procedure to Apply for a Driving Licence in India?
It is a mandate of the Government that every individual willing to ride a bike must have a driving Licence before they could legally start driving on the Indian highways. People are also expected to be trained in a motor driving school before they could start driving on the road, especially for the first-time drivers. So, enrolling yourself in a motor driving school is the first basic step of the procedure.
What Are the various Categories of Driving Licence Available in India?
In India, one can apply for 2 categories of driving licence, namely;
- Personal use licence
- Commercial use licence
1. Personal Use Licence
It depends on the applicant and his/her requirement on the basis of which people can apply for the type of licence they want. The licence is issued depending on the class of vehicle. Even the criteria of eligibility also change as per the vehicle class.

2. Commercial Use Licence
The category of commercial licence is provided for light as well as heavy motor vehicles. Light vehicles like taxis, delivery vans, etc. are included in the light vehicles, while heavy vehicles like trailers require a commercial licence within that category. Overall, there are over 11 categories of Licence available in India. Below are some details:

Eligibility to Apply for a Two-Wheeler Licence
Below are the eligibility criteria to get a bike licence in India:
- Motorcycles with Gear – To apply for a motorcycle licence with gear, the applicant has to be 18 years and above. The person should be aware of the traffic rules and regulations. The applicant is also required to provide valid proof of age and address.
- Motorcycles Without Gear – To apply for a 2-wheeler licence for bikes without gear, the applicant must be 16 years and above. The applicant should also provide the consent of their parents/guardian and should be well-informed about the traffic rules and regulations.
- Heavy Commercial Vehicles – To apply for Licence for heavy commercial motors in India, the age of the applicant has to be 18 years and above. The person should have at least cleared the 8th grade and must be trained under a government training school or from an affiliated center.
Documents Required to Apply for Motorbike Licence
An applicant requires the following documents in order to apply for a bike driving licence:
Address Proof such as Aadhar card, voter’s ID card, LIC policy bond, ration card, electricity bill, passport etc.
Age Proof such as birth certificate, SSC certificate, PAN card, passport, school transfer certificate etc.
Other documents include 3 passport size photographs, duly filled application form, a medical certificate for applicants who are 50 years and above, and the application fee.
Bike Licence Apply – Procedure
There are two ways to apply for a bike licence in India. You can either do it online or use the offline mode.
Offline Process
For the offline process, you have to visit the RTO office and collect the required application form. For learners’ licence application form 1 is required, while for permanent Licence, application form number 4 is required. The forms can also be downloaded from the website of the state transport office.
Once you collect the form, you must fill it and submit it along with the other documents. Once you submit the form, a time slot will be scheduled for a driving test. It is important for the applicant to clear the driving test to get the driving Licence.
Online Process
For the online process, follow the steps below:
- Visit the website of parivahan.gov
- Select the tab of ‘Driving Licence Related Services’
- Choose the state that you want to apply your DL from
- Click on the option of ‘Apply for Driving Licence’
- Complete the form and upload scanned copies of documents
- Now, pay the application fee
- Schedule a slot for DL test
- On the scheduled day, appear for the test
- If the applicant passes the test, DL will be delivered to his/her doorstep
A medical certificate is compulsory for people above 50 years of age.
A Learner's Licence stays valid for over 6 months from the date of issue.
Yes, a Learner's Licence which is issued in one state or UT of India is valid throughout the country for the duration of licence validity.
No, even if you don’t clear a driving test, you don’t get a refund.
Irrespective of where you have applied from, permanent DL is issued from the same state where your learner DL was issued.
