What is Bharat Stage 6 or BS6 Phase 2 for Bikes?

BS6 means Bharat Stage 6 which is the most erudite and advanced gas emission standard for vehicles in India. This is analogous to Euro 6 standards, which are now used in European Union countries, EEA and the United Kingdom. To lessen the rising air pollution in the country, the government of India discarded previous BS-4 standards and opted for BS-6 emission standards. This instigates all automobile manufacturers to extirpate all BS-4 vehicles after April 1, 2020. Now, they will only manufacture and sell BS-6 compliant cars and two-wheelers.

Pollution is one of the alarming concerns in India and according to the WHO; this is the 5th pivotal cause of mortality in India. 30 Indian cities have already inscribed their names in the list of the top 100 most polluted cities in the world. Moreover, in India, the growth of the automobile industry is surging and this industry contributes a major part to environmental pollution.

  •       Carbon dioxide emission is around 58%
  •       Hydrocarbons emission is nearly 46%
  •       Nitrous oxide emission is 18%

To lessen air pollution in India, the central government has introduced stringent BS6 emission limits for vehicles (in 2017). From April 1, 2020, all eminent automobile manufacturers should trade and register only BS6 phase 2 acquiescent vehicles.

What is the Difference Between Bharat Stage 4 (BS4) and Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) Engines

  • The BS6 emission standards are more stringent than the BS4 principles. The Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) levels for BS6 vehicles have been reduced by 70% for diesel and 25% for petrol engines.
  •  For BS6 vehicles, not more than 60 mg/km of NOx emissions are permitted. On the other hand, BS4 permitted 80 mg/km.
  • For BS6 vehicles, the particulate matter (PM) limit is 4.5 mg/km, but for BS4, the limit was 25mg.
  • The emission standards for diesel engines in BS6 stage 2 norms are sterner than BS4 norms. The NOx emission is reduced from 250 mg/km to 80 mg/km.
  • Moreover, for BS6, the PM emission reduces from 25 mg/km to 4.5 mg/km and the HC and NOx emissions also go down from 300 mg/km to 170 mg/km.
  • For BS6 stage 2, Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) is compulsory for all automotive vehicles. But it was not the same with BS4 standards.
  • BS6 bikes models comprise Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) (in diesel engines). This is another notable difference between BS4 and BS6.
  • BS6 bikes also possess Real Driving Emissions (RDE) to calculate the emission level in the real-time world. But with BS4, no such facility was offered.

Impact of BS6 is Rising Price for Two-wheelers

According to the rules of the central government, these days, manufacturers can only deal with BS6 phase 2 bikes. They have introduced some changes in the engine so that it will emit less-lethal gases. These manufacturers can’t use cheap carburetors rather they need to use expensive fuel engines for the engines of their bikes. As a result, the price of the two-wheelers has increased by 10-15 per cent.

How are Two-wheeler Manufacturers Affected Because of BS6 Phase 2 Norms?

To abide by the standards of BS6, every bike manufacturer needs to enhance its investments. Now, they need to use high-end fuel injection systems for the engines of their bikes. These injection systems are expensive as compared to carburetors. Most manufacturers faced humongous losses as they couldn’t sell their BS4 bikes and cars before the deadline (1st April 2020).

Most companies stalled their production and expansion plans due to decreased demand. Customers couldn’t afford the bikes due to their expensive prices. The companies couldn’t introduce new bikes in the market that they have designed based on BS4 norms. Let’s understand this with an example.

Sumit was planning to purchase his first bike in March 2020 after receiving an offer from a company. He did plenty of research and selected a model that fulfills his requirements and budget. But he didn’t have any idea that BS6 norms are going to be introduced from April 2020. His selected a bike that used a carburetor for a fuel engine. When he went to the showroom in April 2020, he couldn’t find his chosen model as it was a BS4 bike model. Other bikes were not in his budget, so he returned. Many people faced the same situation as Sumit due to the implementation of BS6 norms. Many manufacturers faced a huge loss as the demand declined.

For two-wheelers, the demand has reduced

Due to the introduction of new BS6 norms, the price of two-wheelers has increased by 10-15 per cent. The sale graph is also reduced due to this increasing price. This made a sharp rise in two wheeler insurance premiums and braking systems. It is compulsory for every two-wheeler owner to possess third-party insurance to safeguard themselves from untoward events like accidents, etc.
