How to Check the Car Insurance Expiry Date with Easy Steps

One of the most important things to be aware of when you buy a vehicle is that it will need to be insured. Auto insurance is equally as important as buying a new vehicle. If there are any lapses in your insurance coverage, you may get fined for driving an uninsured car and even face legal penalties if you get into an accident. No one wants this to happen, so make sure that your vehicle is always insured. However, there are circumstances where you don’t have access to the policy document but still want to figure out the expiry date of your car insurance. This guide will help understand how to check four-wheeler insurance policy details online.

How to check the expiry date of a four-wheeler insurance policy?

Checking the status of your automobile insurance is a quick and straightforward process. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has created the Insurance Information Bureau, a repository for insurance data (IIB). IIB is an online site that facilitates the tracking of auto insurance policies.

The following is a step-by-step guide on how to check the expiry date of a four-wheeler insurance policy:

  1. Visit the IIB website. (https://nonlife.iib.gov.in/IIB/PublicSearch.jsp)
  2. Then you need to fill in your name, email address, mobile number, vehicle registration number, time of the accident, a security ‘Captcha’ code and submit it.
  3. The policy details of the vehicle will pop up. If it is not accessible, the prior policy details will be displayed.

Alternatively, you can also use VAHAAN e-services to check the expiry date of a four-wheeler insurance policy. The steps are as follows:

  1. Visit the VAHAAN e-services website. (https://vahan.nic.in/nrservices/faces/user/searchstatus.xhtml)
  2. Navigate to ‘Know your vehicle details’ on the page top.
  3. Next, input the ‘vehicle registration number’ and the required ‘verification code’.
  4. Select ‘search vehicle’.
  5. The policy details of the vehicle will appear. IT will include the expiry date of the ongoing plan.

Or, you can also visit the website of your insurer to get a status update of your ongoing four-wheeler insurance policy.

If you wish to check the expiry date of the four-wheeler insurance policy offline, you can:

  • Call your insurance provider. They will be able to provide you with your plan details.
  • Visit the nearest RTO office.
