How are the safest vehicles selected? The top safest cars in India in 2025 are scored using the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). This began in the United States in 1978 and mimics crashes between two automobiles. The test automobile maintains a speed of 64 km/h and is driven into a deformable wall of same weight. In India, automobiles must maintain a speed of 56 kmph while undergoing a comparable impact test.
This indicates that the most safest car in India may not always perform similarly in the NCAP test. The NCAP 5-star rating is awarded to the safest cars while there are lower scores as well. There are two categories, namely Child Occupant Protection and Adult Occupant Protection.
1. Tata Punch – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection

The micro-SUV from Tata Motors has attained a 5 star rating for Adult Protection along with a 4 star rating in the Child Protection category. The Punch launched in October last year and has achieved handsome sales figures ever since. The Punch scored 16.45 out of 17 and a Child Occupant protection score of 40.89 out of 49. ABS, two airbags, EBD, a specific low-traction mode, brake sway control, high-speed warnings, seatbelt reminders, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts are all standard on the Punch.
2. Mahindra XUV700 – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection | Child Protection )
Mahindra’s new flagship SUV has scored an impressive 5 star rating for Adult Protection along with getting 4 stars in the Child Occupant category. The XUV700 is the 5th Indian vehicle to get a 5 star rating in the first category, notching up 16.03 points out of 17. It also scored 41.66 points out of 49 in the second. The premier SUV also gets several features including autonomous emergency braking, 7 airbags, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, forward collision warnings, auto high-beam, smart pilot assist and four disc brakes among others.
3. Tata Nexon – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection | Child Protection )
Tata Motors has notched up another winner in the Nexon which has a 5 star NCAP rating. The Nexon is a reasonably priced 5-seater small SUV with a lot of features.Key features include traction control, brake assist, ESC, passenger and driver airbags, auto-door-lock (speed sensing), anti-theft alarm and more.
4. Tata Altroz – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection | Child Protection )
It is not just its SUVs; Tata Motors has also impressively created the Altroz premium hatchback. It has a 5 star NCAP rating along with offering safety features such as engine-check warnings, adjustable seats, EBD, centrally-mounted fuel tanks, passenger and driver airbags, ABS and a lot more.
5. Mahindra XUV300 – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection | Child Protection )
Mahindra & Mahindra has already tasted success at the NCAP with the 5 star rating for its XUV300 compact SUV. The XUV300 offers a reliable and capable engine along with safety features like front and side impact beams, central locking, ABS, child safety locks, and more.
6. Mahindra Marazzo – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection | Child Protection )
The Marazzo from Mahindra & Mahindra is another winner and has notched up a 4 star rating at the NCAP. It comes with safety features such as EBD, anti-theft alarm, door-ajar warnings and crash sensor.
7. Volkswagen Polo – (GNCAP Ratings: Adult Protection | Child Protection )
The Volkswagen Polo comes with a 4 star NCAP rating and is a stylish premium hatchback with various safety features like central locking, power door locks, ESC, engine immobilizer and ABS.
