Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) is a health insurance plan for families offered by the government of Maharashtra to the citizens of the state. As per the recent expansion done under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, the health insurance cover for every family has been increased from INR 1.5 Lakh to INR 5 lakh. The scheme further increased the number of treatments/procedures covered under the plan from 972 to 1209 as per the new announcement.
In addition, the scheme also added another 500 hospitals in the list of empanelled hospitals to make the total list more than 1500.
Also, the government is planning to make the plan universal to make it accessible to all citizens of Maharashtra irrespective of their economic background.
The primary objective of the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana is to offer cashless and quality healthcare facilities to the citizens of the state against various illnesses that need hospitalization. It covers surgeries and cures through care providers via network hospitals.
As discussed above, the Mahatma Jyotirao Pule Jan Arogya Yojana is Government of Maharashtra’s leading health insurance scheme. Under the scheme, people of Maharashtra are allowed cashless facilities to get treatment for various diseases listed under the plan. The treatment can be done in the network of hospitals that are enlisted as part of the yojana including both government and non-government hospitals.
The scheme was earlier termed as Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana and was initiated from eight districts of Maharashtra on July 2,2012. Later, it was extended to 28 districts on November 21, 2013.
The insurer offering coverage for the scheme is United India Insurance Company Limited, which is one of the best health insurance companies in India in the public sector domain. The assurance mode of the coverage is taken care of by the State Health Assurance Society. The premium paid by the government under the plan is INR 797/- per year per family on behalf of eligible families to benefit from the scheme.

Holders of White/Orange/Yellow Ration Card, Antyodaya Anna Yojana Card (AAY) or Annapurna Card are eligible for the scheme. Farmers from districts that are categorized as agriculturally distressed locations of Maharashtra are also eligible for the plan.
Families living below the poverty line with income less than one lakh rupees per annum and who hold either Antyodaya card or Annapurna card or Yellow/Orange ration card are the ones who will benefit mostly from the free medical access under this scheme.
