What is the International Day of Education? History of the Event

The International Day of Education was initiated by the UN General Assembly in 2018 to mark the significance of education in the overall development of nations across the globe and for world peace.  The first International Day of Education was observed on 24 January 2019 as per a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly.

The resolution was supported by 59 member nations to mark the introduction of International Day of Education. It was done to strengthen the process of taking transformative actions towards quality education as well as to foster equality and inclusive education to one and all.

International Education Day is celebrated on 24 January every year. This year, which is the fifth year of the celebration, the theme is decided as “to invest in people, prioritize education”.

The UN General Assembly initiated the observance of 24 January as the International Day of Education to fulfill certain objectives. As per UNESCO or United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, below are some of the objectives of the day:

  • It concentrates on the triggers which could transform and shape equal and inclusive system of education, while accelerating progress towards SDG4 (Sustainable Development Goal 4)
  • The day also aims at increasing the impact of innovation towards digital inclusion, skill enhancement, enhance environmental competencies as well as gender equality
  • Further, it aims at reducing the unequal gap in terms of access for education as well as education completion, as per the SDG4 objective
