A girl child, like a male child, has the right to receive equal opportunities in terms of education, healthcare, nutrition and everything else. Through the National Girl Child Day, the government wants to support and allow equal opportunities to girls in India.

The Indian government has not officially announced a theme for National Girl Child Day 2024. Previously, the slogans were “Digital Generation, Our Generation, Our Time is Now—Our Rights, Our Future.”

About National Girl Child Day – Significance

The National Girl Child Day was initiated in the year 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India to increase awareness about the importance of girl child.  The Day was initiated to eradicate discrimination in Indian society that is done on the basis of gender. Indian society being a male dominated one, the initiative was thought to bring change in the thinking and mentality of people towards girls. For this, various initiatives were taken by the government including the introduction of schemes such as Bati Bachao Beti Padhao, Save the Girl Child etc.

The National Girl Child Day is significant as it supports the empowerment of girls in a society where girls are still tortured, killed, aborted, as well as made to face several inequalities based on gender. Further, there are many girls who still lack many opportunities as against the ones offered to boys in India.

Hence, several organizations and the government organize activities and events on this day to make people aware about eliminating the discrimination against girls and to empower them to have a better future. Further, the central and the state governments initiate campaigns and policies on this day to promote the development of girl child across India.

Objectives of National Girl Child Day

The National Girl Child Day aims at raising awareness among people about the rights of a girl child and to allow new opportunities for them.

Here are some objectives of the day:

  • To eliminate inequalities faced by girl children in the Indian society
  • To ensure that each girl child in India receive respect and value in the society
  • To ensure that they receive human rights in India
  • To work towards maintaining the child sex ratio in the country
  • To change people’s perspective towards the girl child
  • To encourage people about accepting girl child by making them aware about their significant role and importance
  • To address the issues of girl children in India with respect to their health, education, nutrition, respect etc.
  • To propagate gender equality in India

How is National Girl Child Day celebrated?

To celebrate the National Girl Child Day, the government of India organizes several campaigns which educate people and increase their consciousness towards the girl children.  The National Girl Child Day campaign was initiated by the Women and Child Development Ministry, Government of India in 2008 to highlight the inequalities received by girl children in Indian society.

The government runs several ads on various mass media platforms like television, local newspapers, and radio stations to make people aware about it and to put their message forward, which is – “Save the Girl Child”.

Various government as well as non-government organizations come together to take part on this day by organizing events and activities. This way, they fight against the social stigma that is associated with the girl children in India.
