Can you imagine a world without girls? It is simply not possible. A girl is a precious soul that makes life possible on earth. Hence, to raise awareness about the rights and opportunities of a girl child, the National Girl Child Day is celebrated in India every year on 24th January. The day was initiated by the Ministry of Women and child development, Government of India.
A girl child, like a male child, has the right to receive equal opportunities in terms of education, healthcare, nutrition and everything else. Through the National Girl Child Day, the government wants to support and allow equal opportunities to girls in India.
The Indian government has not officially announced a theme for National Girl Child Day 2023. Previously, the slogans were “Digital Generation, Our Generation, Our Time is Now—Our Rights, Our Future.”
The National Girl Child Day was initiated in the year 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India to increase awareness about the importance of girl child. The Day was initiated to eradicate discrimination in Indian society that is done on the basis of gender. Indian society being a male dominated one, the initiative was thought to bring change in the thinking and mentality of people towards girls. For this, various initiatives were taken by the government including the introduction of schemes such as Bati Bachao Beti Padhao, Save the Girl Child etc.
The National Girl Child Day is significant as it supports the empowerment of girls in a society where girls are still tortured, killed, aborted, as well as made to face several inequalities based on gender. Further, there are many girls who still lack many opportunities as against the ones offered to boys in India.
Hence, several organizations and the government organize activities and events on this day to make people aware about eliminating the discrimination against girls and to empower them to have a better future. Further, the central and the state governments initiate campaigns and policies on this day to promote the development of girl child across India.
