Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which is commonly known as Autism, is a life-long condition that involves behavioural challenges faced by autistic people. Under this condition, the individuals suffering from this disorder require care and facilities for life. Autism is a condition that starts during childhood and stays active throughout adulthood.
World Autism Day is a health-specific United Nations Day which advocates and recognises the rights of autistic people and spreads awareness about their achievements. The day focuses on enhancing the quality of life of patients with autistic disorder and allowing them complete support to live a worthy life.
The word ‘Autism’ first appeared in 1911 by Eugen Bleuler, a psychiatrist who used the term to describe a specific cluster of symptoms in schizophrenia. After enough research on the topic, the UN General Assembly set April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated each year to encourage people in raising awareness about autistic people and to find new ways to improve the wellness of such people.
“Light It Up Blue” is the theme of World Autism Awareness Day 2023. This year’s theme urges people to wear blue and to turn on the lights in their homes or businesses.
World Autism Awareness Day supports various causes that promote awareness of the disease. School going children are educated about the condition and encouraged to accept it so that bullying against autistic children can be discouraged. The best way to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day is by means of getting familiar with the condition. Also, this way the understanding of common people towards the disease could be enhanced to promote kindness for autistic people.
