How Long a Car Insurance Policy Remains Valid?

Like other products, insurance plans also have a validity period and most car insurance policies remain valid for a period of one year.  The policy holder is expected to renew the policy before the validity expires to enjoy the coverage.

In case of new car, the car owner is supposed to buy the insurance plan for a period of 3 years as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. The owner is expected to renew the policy before the 3 year term expires. Once done, you can purchase the next policy for one year period, which you must renew yearly.

Of course, it is very important to renew the policy before it expires by checking RC status to stay away from any legal hassles.

Why is it important to have timely renewal of your car insurance plan?

It is important to renew your insurance before it expires to be able to enjoy the coverage of your car insurance under the policy. However, in case of a lapse due to non-renewal, the consequences can be as follows:

  • You cannot claim for any compensation from the insurer: Once your policy date expires, the insurance agency is not liable to pay you for any damages done to your car. You have to pay from your pocket for every loss.
  • You might get into legal hassle: Since having a car insurance is obligatory in India, you don’t have a choice when it comes to insurance. Thus, if you do not renew your car policy, you are violating the Motor Vehicles Act, and are prone to getting into legal hassle. If you get caught without a car insurance, you will have to pay penalty or might even land up in jail.
  • Might have to pay high premium: If you do not renew your policy on time, you might be labeled as a careless person. If so happens, your insurance company might charge you high premium on renewal.
  • You may lose your No Claim Bonus (NCB): NCB is offered to a car insurance owner as a savings on premium renewal. However, this is available for claim-free years and can help the policy owner save over 50% only if he/she renew the policy within 90 days of expiry date.
