Vehicle Registration Number – An Overview?

A vehicle/car registration number is a figure allotted by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of your district for your vehicle.

  • This number is unique to every car and it defines the identification of the vehicle and its owner
  • Once you purchase a car, it is obligatory to get it registered with the RTO of your area within a span of 30 days
  • Once the registration process is complete, your RTO will provide a unique registration number for your vehicle
  • The registration number is imprinted on a number plate and placed on the front and back sides of your car
  • The registration number is your car’s identification number

If you want to use the registration number to find the insurance details of your vehicle, you can do it online through the IIB portal or the Vahan Sewa as mentioned below.

How to Get Vehicle/Car Insurance Details by Registration Number

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is obligatory for every car owner to have an insurance policy for its vehicle. An insurance policy covers a car owner against damages, injury or in case of death caused due to an accident of your car by a third party. In such a situation, the policy holder can claim the insured amount by using the insurance policy details. However, in case of unavailability of the insurance details, it is possible to use your vehicle number details or the registration number of your car to procure all information pertaining to your car insurance.

If you want to know more about how to use your car registration number to obtain insurance policy details or how to do insurance check by vehicle number or how to find insurance policy number by vehicle number, read on.

What is Vehicle Registration Number (RC Number)?

When you buy a new car, you must get it registered with the RTO or Regional Transport Office of your district within a month of your purchase. The RTO issues a unique 10-digit number to your car as its identity number.

The registration number is a unique combination of letters and numbers indicating the particular state and district where the registration was done. Overall, the vehicle number details goes like this:

  • First two letters show – State of registration of the car
  • The second two digits show – District where the car is registered or the district code
  • The last four digits are unique identification numbers of your vehicle
  • In case of unavailability of a unique number, RTO can use one or two letters to make the registration number unique to your car. These letters are termed as RTO sequence number.

Vehicle Registration Number Format

  • Your vehicle registration number has a specific format of ‘AA’ ‘11’ ‘AA’ ‘1111’
  • Here, ‘A’ denotes letters, and ‘1’ denotes numbers
  • The initial two letters indicate the code of the state (where you have registered your car)
  • The next 2 digits represent the code of the district
  • The 2 alphabets that appear next indicate the present RTO series that classifies vehicles
  • The last 4 numbers are used for the identification of your vehicle
  • Let’s take an example to understand the format.
  • For instance, your car registration number is AS 01 BZ 4884
  • AS signifies the code of the State where you have registered your car. In this case Assam
  • 01 indicates the district of the local RTO’s location
  • BZ is the sequence number of the RTO
  • 4884 is your car’s unique identification number

For example, let’s assume your car registration number is UK 07 GA 9988. Here:

UK – means Uttarakhand
07 – stands for the district code – Dehradun
GA – is the RTO sequence number, whereas
9988 – is the unique identity number of your car

This registration number is an obligation that you need to procure at the time of purchasing your vehicle insurance policy.
