Aadhaar is a 12-digit number provided by UIDAI or the Unique Identification Authority of India that is used as proof of identity and address for every resident in India. PAN or Permanent Account Number, on the other hand, is again a unique ten-digit alphanumeric number that is issued by the IT or Income Tax Department of India. It is important to link your Aadhaar Card with your PAN Card because it is required at the time of filing your income tax returns. Thus, for taxpayers in India, linking Aadhaar with PAN is crucial.

If you have not yet linked your Aadhaar with your PAN or are unsure of the Aadhaar PAN link status, you may check it online. This post discusses how to get a PAN Aadhaar link check with steps and other relevant information.

What are the Different Ways to Check the Aadhaar Card and PAN Card Link Status Online?

There are two key ways to check the Aadhaar Card and PAN Card Link Status online. They are

  1. Check the Link Status of Aadhaar Card and PAN Card online without logging in to the income tax portal, and the second is
  2. Check the Link Status of Aadhaar Card and PAN Card online by logging in to the income tax portal

So, you have the option to log in to the income tax portal to check the PAN Aadhaar link status, or you may do it without logging in. Let’s look at the steps to check the link status below:

How to Check the Status of the PAN Aadhaar link Online without Logging in to the Website of Income Tax?

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Visit the portal of income tax for e-filing at

  2. Go to the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ under the ‘Quick Links’ tab
  3. You will reach page. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number in the spaces given on the screen

  4.  Next, click on the tab of ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’
  5. You will instantly receive a message regarding the link status of your Aadhaar and PAN card. It will read, “Your PAN is already linked to the given Aadhaar” or “PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ link to link your Aadhaar with PAN”

Further, if the link status of your Aadhaar- PAN is in progress, you will receive the below message. “Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Please check the status later by clicking the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ link on the Home Page.”

How to Check the Link Status of your Aadhaar and PAN Card Online by Logging in to the official Income Tax Website?

  1. Go to the e-filing PAN Aadhaar link portal of Income Tax and log in using your Aadhaar/PAN/Other User ID
  2. Next on the homepage ‘Dashboard’ click the tab of ‘Link Aadhaar Status’
  3. Alternatively, you may go to the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ under the ‘My Profile’ tab

Your Aadhaar number will display if your Aadhaar and PAN are already linked. If your Aadhaar and PAN are not linked, you will see a message stating – ‘Link Aadhaar Status’.

Further, if your Aadhaar and PAN linking process is pending with UIDAI, you may have to revisit the site later to check the status.

How to Find Aadhar-PAN Link Status through Direct Link?

If you want to check the Aadhaar-PAN card link status directly, you may visit the below link:

Once the screen appears, submit your PAN card and Aadhaar card numbers and click on the ‘View Link Aadhaar Update Status’ tab. A message will display to show the link status on the screen.

Procedure To Check the Link Status of Aadhaar-PAN via SMS

You can also avail of the SMS facility to check the Aadhaar-PAN link status. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. SMS – UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar number> < 10-digit PAN number>
  2. Send the SMS to either of the two numbers – ‘567678’ or ‘56161’
  3. You will receive a response from the concerned service about the Aadhaar-PAN link status

Depending on the case, if the Aadhaar is linked with PAN, you can get a message stating – “Aadhaar is already associated with PAN in the Income Tax Department database. Thank you for using our services.”

However, in case the Aadhaar-PAN link is not there, you can see a message stating – “Aadhaar is not associated with PAN in the Income Tax Department database. Thank you for using our services.”

Procedure to link Aadhaar with PAN Online

If your Aadhaar card is not linked to your PAN card, you can link them now by visiting the official Income Tax Portal and paying a late fine of INR 1000. Find below the simple steps to link Aadhaar with PAN:

  1. Visit the official portal of Income Tax e-filing
  2. Click on the ‘e-Pay Tax’ tab under the ‘Quick Links’ button
  3. Under the PAN/TAN, submit the ‘PAN’ number and mobile number and click on the ‘Continue’ button
  4. OTP verification will be there, and you will be redirected to the ‘Pay Tax’ page. Press ‘Continue’ to proceed
  5. Next, under the ‘Income Tax’ tab, click the ‘Proceed’ button
  6. Once you pay the fine or challan amount, click on the ‘Continue’ button
  7. Select the year of assessment, type of payment, and press the ‘Continue’ button
  8. Select the pre-filled applicable amount and press ‘Continue’ to make the payment
  9. Once the fine is paid, go to the ‘Quick Links’ heading and select the ‘Link Aadhaar’ tab this time
  10. Submit the PAN and Aadhaar numbers. Next, click on the ‘Validate’ button
  11. Submit your Aadhaar number and mobile number to generate OTP. Click on ‘Validate’
  12. A request to link Aadhaar with PAN will be sent to the UIDAI

Alternatively, you can submit your Aadhaar-PAN details to a PAN card center and get an Aadhaar-PAN link request form to complete the procedure.

What is the Fee Charged for Linking Aadhaar and PAN Card?

A fee of INR 1000 is charged as challan/fine to link an Aadhaar card with a PAN. It was free till 31 March 2022, while a penalty of INR 500 was charged from 31 March 2022 to 30 June 2022. However, this fee/penalty was increased to INR 1000 from 1 July 2022. Hence, if you are willing to link your Aadhaar with your PAN, you must pay INR 1,000.

Who is Eligible for Aadhaar-PAN Linking?

All taxpayers should link Aadhaar with PAN compulsorily by paying the required fee. Not doing so will make your PAN card inoperative. Section 139AA of the IT Act makes it compulsory for taxpayers with a PAN card to link it to Aadhaar.

NRIs or non-resident Indians, however, are not eligible to link PAN and Aadhaar. Also, Indian citizens above the age of 80 and people residing in states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir may not link their Aadhaar with PAN because of their exempt category.
