Delhi being the capital of the country and a business hub, is one of the most populated cities in India. With a large number of population commuting from one part of the city to another, the increasing number of vehicles running on the roads of Delhi throughout the day is apparent. With the increasing number of vehicles, the chances of road accidents has also risen to a great extent.
To control the rising number of accidents taking place on a daily basis, the Government of India has made a few alterations to the Motor vehicle Act, 1988, and the amended Act was applied and commenced from September 1, 2019. The changes in the Act are expected to reduce the rising number of accidental deaths, which was around 1680 in Delhi in the year 2019.
Though many states like Karnataka, Gujarat, and Kerala didn’t follow the amended rules thoroughly when they were put into effect. These state governments made few changes in the Act as they were of the view that the revised rates of the e challan status were too high for common people of the middle and lower-middle category to afford. However, the NCT of Delhi didn’t amend the rates in the revised delhi traffic police challan and implemented them alike.
Further, Delhi being the national capital, has always stayed ahead of other states in every aspect when it comes to the introduction of a new products, expertise, and so on. For better handling of traffic, the Government of India has installed cameras and speed sensors on different traffic signals and across roads within the city. It was done to make it easy for Delhi traffic police to handle traffic from their control room to levy online Delhi traffic challan or e-challan.

The changes made in the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 were executed by the Government of India from September 1, 2019 after it was passed by the parliament. The implementation of the new Act made the vehicle owners of Delhi all the more alert. They became responsive in terms of adhering to traffic rules. Moreover, the people driving a vehicle in Delhi now know that if they are caught without their driving license, third-party insurance, or without a no pollution record, they will have to pay e challan in Delhi. Moreover, they also need to maintain the registration certificate with their documents. If you are caught without any of these papers mentioned in the modified Traffic Act, the Delhi traffic police can levy challan on you.

Electronic challan or e-challan as it is commonly known is an online Delhi traffic challan issued when a vehicle driver is caught on camera for violating any traffic rules. The defaulter who gets a challan has to pay the fine online.
To issue a Delhi traffic challan, the government has installed speed sensors and cameras on most roads and important traffic signals. The live feed of such cameras reach the monitors of Delhi traffic police control room and they issue challans against the defaulters violating any traffic rules. The cameras basically notes the vehicle number from the number plates and the traffic control department can seek the address of the vehicle owner from their registration number. Once they find the details, they send the e-challan on the respective email ids of defaulters. As per rule, the defaulter has to pay back the challan within 60 days of its issue date.
The concept of e-Challan was initiated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India.

When a defaulter of a traffic rule is caught on camera, he/she is sent the e-challan through e-mail or through a call on his/her registered phone number. Moreover, a hard copy is also sent to the permanent residence address of the defaulter and he/she is expected to pay the challan within 60 days.
To check online traffic challan status issued against you, you must visit the Delhi Traffic Police Website. Here are the steps that you can follow for online challan check:
The online traffic challan payment can be made via both online and offline mode. For paying offline, you can visit a nearby police station and pay it off. For online Delhi traffic police challan payment visit the official PARIVAHAN website and follow the steps below:
You will receive a notification on your registered mobile once you make the payment.
Besides the above, Delhi Traffic Police also has an app through which you can make the online challan payment.
‘Tatpar’ is the Delhi Traffic Police app to check Delhi traffic police challan online payment, which was launched by Anil Bajaj, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The app offers over 50 services related to Delhi police, and it also offers the option to pay your e-challan.
For people who do not want to make online traffic challan payment as penalty for breaking traffic regulations, here are the main rules to follow:
It is easy to limit the possibilities of paying a fine or traffic challan payment if you follow traffic rules well and maintain discipline regarding traffic and road safety.
To pay the Delhi Traffic Challan offline you can visit the Delhi Traffic Police Headquarters with the required documents. You can also pay the traffic fine in any police station near you.
If you have received any traffic violation notice, you should carry it with you. You may also request the traffic police in-charge to check your dues and penalties.
It is not at all good to avoid paying the penalties of traffic violation under any circumstances. You must pay the fines immediately so that you can drive without any hassle on the road.
What will be the consequences if a traffic rule violator forgets the traffic fine payment? The traffic rules these days are very strict and non-payment of fines within the prescribed timeline might bring upon legal consequences to you.
If you miss the date of payment of the penalty, you might get a court summons at your home address. You might have to go to the court to give a valid explanation to the judge for the breach of the traffic rules. If you do not go to court or do not pay the traffic fine, your licence might get suspended.
The best thing that can be done to avoid a traffic e challan is to follow the rules of traffic on the road. If you do not break any rule there will be no question of paying any fine. Moreover, there are some rules of thumb to follow to avoid paying traffic e-challan as mentioned below:

The e-challan is like an official written notice of the traffic department that is used by the traffic police to penalize people who break traffic rules on the road.
You can visit the official website of Parivahan, managed by the Government of India to check your e-challan status:
Visit the Parivahan e-challan webpage.
Enter your Challan number/vehicle number/ Driving license number.
A list of your e-challans shall be displayed.
Click on the challan to check its status.
The traffic challan can be paid either online or offline. Each state in India has a separate website dedicated to transport. To make an online payment for traffic challan, you can either visit the state transport website or pay through official website of E-challan.

Visit echallan.parivahan.gov.
Select 'Check Challan Status' from the drop-down menu under 'Check Online Services'.
Enter the required details and captcha.
Click on 'Get Detail'.
Click on 'Pay Now' option.
Here are the steps to make e-challan payment online:
Open the Paytm Mobile Application on your mobile.
Click on 'Recharge & Pay Bills'
Scroll down to find 'Challan' & click on it.
Select the 'Traffic Authority'
Enter the required details such as Challan Number/Challan ID, Vehicle Number etc.
No, once a challan is issued it cannot be cancelled.
The timeline to pay traffic e-challan is within 60 days. If you do not pay the fine within 60 days of generating the e-challan, you might be summoned by the traffic police for further legal consequences.
Traffic Police officers such as Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police and the ranks above it are only allowed to collect the on-spot fines from defaulters.
As per the Motor vehicle Act of India, drunk driving or driving by a person under the influence of drugs is punishable with heavy fine and/or imprisonment.
