PAN or Permanent Account Number is a card that contains a unique ten-digit alphanumeric number. It is compulsorily required for every Indian citizen as well as for other nationals/entities who are doing business in India. PAN card serves as identity proof that is needed for several purposes like filing ITR, doing monetary transactions, etc. Let us discuss PAN card fees and other details in this post.

What Does a PAN or Permanent Account Number Mean? Why Is Having a PAN Obligatory?

A PAN Card is issued by the Income Tax Department of India under the Central Board of Direct Taxes regulations and is given away to the public in the form of a laminated card. The PAN card contains the PAN or the permanent account number of an individual along with other details like the person’s name, date of birth, father/spouse name, and a photograph of the person. A PAN card serves as an ID and age proof for an individual/entity.

The primary role of a PAN card is to hold records of financial transactions, especially those associated with revenue. Hence, the government makes it compulsory for everyone with a source of income to have a PAN card. However, you should remember that having a PAN card has nothing to do with an individual’s nationality. Even foreigners working and investing in India are required to hold PAN cards.

It is easy to procure a PAN card in India, and if you intend to obtain one, you may be acquainted with the fees associated with procuring and correcting PAN cards.
